Maurice Jackson, of Northeast DC, was walking at around 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, when he began talking with another group of teens, police say.
During that altercation near the intersection of New Jersey Avenue and P Street, NW, someone in the group pulled out a gun, fired multiple shots that struck Jackson.
He was rushed to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries, officials confirmed.
The shooting came on the same day that the District reached a concerning milestone following what has been a bloody 2023 in the nation's capital.
"We are sick and tired of the gun violence in this city, and we need to have family members, parents, brothers, sisters, really come forward and share with us these things that are happening, and specifically when it comes to these guns," acting MPD Police Chief Pamela Smith said Tuesday.
"It's troubling to me, like I'm sure it's trouble to every single person who has sons, daughters, mothers (living here) and we need to put an end to this gun violence (and I) believe we need to get the guns off of the streets."
No information about a possible suspect has been released by the department.
